7. LUCKY CHARMS AT CHECK-POINT 6-ALPHA
"Want a warm-up?" the marine embassy sergeant asked Stryker. Without answering, the MP pushed his mug across the consular desk for a refill.
"I'll tell you, Simm . never seen anything like it—there we both went flying balls to the wind right into the hotel courtyard, and that goofy Marsh only got a hairline fracture to his thigh to show for it all. . . ."
"And Captain Harlow?" the marine brought his own cup nearly to overflowing before adding a bit of cream and sugar. Stryker smiled but didn't comment on the sugar. He was thinking that he'd always been under the impression marines weren't allowed cream and sugar!
"Yoh, you guessed it . . . such luck. The ol' buzzard was standing right beside the diving board when we made our dramatic entrance."
"Tough break." The tall marine brushed at his thick mustache for a second then swept back his wavy locks— almost unheard of among leathernecks.
"But you wanna know the strangest thing about it all? Standing in the rubble of the wall was this little old mama-san. The same woman we had nearly run down minutes before . . . during the chase, when we knocked the roof off a storefront back on Nguyen Du. And I could swear I saw her face among the crowd earlier, when we were parked alongside a bonze bonfire. . ."
"Damned Orientals all look alike to me," the marine muttered, "once they get past the age of fifty or so."
"Well, I guess it's no big thing. Just kinda nerve- rattling . . . on top of everything else, you know?" Stryker gulped down half the cup, searching for the caffeine lift.
Two young lance corporals appeared in the dim doorway several yards behind the NCOs, and Sergeant Wabbitt motioned them forward.
"Perimeter secure, sergeant," one of them reported.
"Fine, fine," the big marine waved them back out into the night. "Go take in a movie or something . . . just keep your pager on standby."
"Any clandestine activity under the tamarind trees?" Stryker asked before the enlisted men had a chance to - proceed very far. Gleaming smiles broke their previously grim features, but they didn't respond to the bait immediately. Instead, Wabbitt waved them off again, smiling himself as he shook his head from side to side, and the marines vanished.
"I'm tellin' you it ain't my men ballin' the dinks out there behind the treeline," the marine sergeant insisted, but Stryker only cleared his throat sarcastically. Wabbitt changed the subject like the pro he was. "So what did Harlow say to you anyway. I mean, three strikes and you are out, aren't you?" A get-even giggle escaped him.
"Aw, same old shit," Stryker tugged at the bullet-hole scar across his earlobe. "Threatened to bust me a couple stripes if I continued abusing government property in the form of GIs. . . ."
Wabbitt laughed loudly at that one. "So who's scheduled to ride with you tomorrow?" The marine sergeant was never quite sure what Stryker's shifts were.
